Can a drawing feel rough?

Texture describes how a surface feels or appears to feel. Dots, short marks and repeated lines can suggest roughness, softness or smoothness in a drawing. The marks do not change the paper into that material; they help a viewer imagine it.

What you need
Paper and a pencil, or a partner to talk with. Drawing and speaking are welcome.
Look at familiar cloth and a smooth cup from a safe distance.
Fill two paper boxes with marks that suggest their different surfaces.
Ask a partner which marks helped them imagine each surface.
