01 / UNDERSTAND

Here is what is happening.

A shadow forms when an object blocks light. An opaque object blocks most light; a clear sheet lets much of it through. Changing the positions of the light, object and wall can change the shadow.

02 / MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Your little investigation

What you need

A torch, a wall and your hand. Ask an adult to help; keep the beam away from eyes.

  1. Shine the torch at a wall. Put your hand between them.

  2. Keep the torch and wall fixed. Move your hand closer to the torch, then farther away.

  3. Describe or draw what changed. Predict what a spoon would do.
