Make equal groups and discover a shortcut to counting.

Here is what is happening.
Equal groups have the same number in each group. Three groups of four make 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. We can also write 3 × 4 = 12. Check the groups, not just the total.

What you need
Paper and a pencil; draw the flowers instead of picking them.
Draw twelve simple flowers.
Circle four flowers at a time. Count the circles.
Now try groups of three. Tell someone what stayed the same.
