01 / UNDERSTAND

Here is what is happening.

Sorting means putting items together using a rule. The same item can belong to different groups when the rule changes. A big circle is both big and round.

02 / MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Your little investigation

What you need

Paper and a pencil. Draw objects rather than using tiny loose pieces.

  1. Draw a large circle, a small circle, a large square and a small square.

  2. Group them by shape. Say the rule aloud.

  3. Now group by size. Explain why the groups changed.

03 / CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING
