Where is the treasure?
Give directions that a friend can follow on paper.
Take your time. Speak, draw or write your answers.
Here is what is happening.
Directions tell us how to move from a starting point. Left and right depend on which way you face. A map is easier to follow when its orientation stays fixed.
Your little investigation
What you need
Draw a small square grid on paper. Use a pencil mark as your explorer.
Mark a start and a star three squares to its right. Keep the paper still.
Give a friend directions using squares: one right, one right, one right.
Add a second route that includes moving up or down.
From the start, how many squares right reach this star?
