Listening is an adventure in someone else’s words.
Take your time. Speak, draw or write your answers.
Here is what is happening.
Retelling means sharing the main meaning in your own words. You need not repeat every word perfectly. A listener can ask for a sentence again and check what they understood. If a detail is missing, ask rather than filling it with a guess.
Pause. Make the idea your own.
Explain one idea to a partner, draw it or write it in your own words. Which part is an observation, an example or a question?
You can use a home language. No need to share personal experiences or finish everything in one sitting.Your little investigation
What you need
Paper and a pencil, or a partner to talk with. Drawing and speaking are welcome.
A partner says: “The green book is under the small table.” Or read it together.
Retell the location and ask if you understood correctly.
Swap roles using a new imaginary object and location.
