Whose pencil is longer?
A fair measurement starts at the same place.
Take your time. Speak, draw or write your answers.
Here is what is happening.
To compare lengths directly, line up one end of each object. When measuring with small paper units, use equal-sized units without gaps or overlaps. A bigger unit gives a smaller count for the same length; the object itself has not shrunk.

What you need
Paper and a pencil, or a partner to talk with. Drawing and speaking are welcome.
Draw two lines and align their starting points. Compare their ends.
Measure one line with equal drawn boxes, placed edge to edge.
Use larger equal boxes and explain why the count changes.
