01 / UNDERSTAND

Here is what is happening.

In a simple series circuit, current needs a complete conducting path through the battery and bulb. Opening the switch breaks that path. A circuit diagram is a model of connections, not a picture of how components must be arranged physically. This activity uses paper only.

Pause. Make the idea your own.

Explain one idea to a partner, draw it or write it in your own words. Which part is an observation, an example or a question?

You can use a home language. No need to share personal experiences or finish everything in one sitting.
02 / MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Your little investigation

What you need

Paper only. Do not use wall sockets, household wiring or opened batteries.

  1. Draw a battery, bulb and switch connected in one loop. Label each.

  2. Trace the closed loop. Erase one connection to represent an open switch.

  3. Explain why moving the bulb in the drawing need not change the connections.
