Can you trace a complete circuit with your finger?
Here is what is happening.
In a simple series circuit, current needs a complete conducting path through the battery and bulb. Opening the switch breaks that path. A circuit diagram is a model of connections, not a picture of how components must be arranged physically. This activity uses paper only.

Trace the closed loop. Erase one connection to represent an open switch.
