Walk around a rectangle
The border and the space inside answer different questions.

Here is what is happening.
Perimeter is the distance around a shape. A rectangle 6 cm long and 4 cm wide has perimeter 6 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 20 cm. Area measures the inside, here 24 square centimetres. Length units and square units describe different quantities.
