01 / UNDERSTAND

Here is what is happening.

A map key explains its symbols. A triangle might mean a hill on one map and a tent on another. Read the key instead of assuming. Directions and a scale add information, but a simple sketch may not use an exact scale; label that honestly.

Pause. Make the idea your own.

Explain one idea to a partner, draw it or write it in your own words. Which part is an observation, an example or a question?

You can use a home language. No need to share personal experiences or finish everything in one sitting.
02 / MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Your little investigation

What you need

Paper and a pencil, or a partner to talk with. Drawing and speaking are welcome.

  1. Draw an imagined park with a gate, reading bench and water point.

  2. Choose three symbols and explain them in a key.

  3. Ask a partner to find a route using only the map and key.

03 / CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

What should you read before interpreting an unfamiliar symbol?
