A fallen leaf is part of a continuing story.

Here is what is happening.
Decomposers such as many fungi and bacteria break down dead material and help recycle nutrients. A leaf does not vanish all at once. Moisture, temperature and the material itself can affect decomposition. Observe through pictures or from a distance; do not handle mould or unknown waste.
