Here is what is happening.

When salt dissolves, it spreads through water so its grains are no longer visible. This differs from an object merely breaking into visible pieces. A clear-looking liquid is not necessarily pure water. Never taste a liquid to identify it. Dissolving does not mean the material stops existing.

What you need

Adult supervision, a transparent unbreakable cup, water, a spoon and table salt. No tasting or heating.

  1. With an adult, add a small pinch of table salt to water in a transparent cup.

  2. Stir gently. Draw what you see before and after, without tasting.

  3. Explain why “I cannot see grains” differs from “there is nothing in the water”.
