Wet shoes by a door suggest a story—but which one?

Here is what is happening.
An inference combines a clue with what you already know. Imagine wet shoes and an umbrella near a door. Someone may have been outside in rain, but the shoes might also have been washed. A thoughtful reader names the clue and keeps more than one explanation open.
