Earth’s atmosphere is a mixture of gases, mostly nitrogen and oxygen near the surface. Water vapour varies with conditions. Air occupies space and has mass even when we cannot see it. Atmosphere diagrams exaggerate thickness to make layers visible; drawings are not always to scale.
